The backbone of any good weed control program is a pre-emergent herbicide. Pre-emergent herbicides are soil applied herbicides that create a barrier in the top layer of the soil and keeps weed seeds from emerging. This essentially means that when a weed seed comes to the surface to try and germinate, it takes in the pre-emergent and the weed is killed before the seedling ever appears. This is a much easier way of controlling weeds than waiting to terminate the weeds with a post emergent herbicide. Pre-emergent is included in our first two applications of the year and on our fall applications. Timing these pre-emergent applications is essential to the success of our lawn care program. The more weeds we can eliminate before they emerge, the better of the lawn will look throughout the year.
Post-emergent herbicides are entirely different than pre-emergent herbicides. Post-emergent herbicides are designed to eliminate weeds after they have already germinated. This means that they are already visible and growing in the lawn. Each of our pre-emergent applications are coupled with a post-emergent to ensure that any weeds that may have germinated before the pre-emergent was applied are still taken care of at the time of the application. Post-emergent herbicides are also used all throughout the summer to control a variety of summer time weeds that pre-emergent’s are not as effective on. Nutsedge, dallisgrass, and goosegrass are three of the main weeds we have to control post-emergently. These are mainly summer time grassy weeds that are difficult to control without the help of some post-emergent herbicides.
